It’s Day 363 of the Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose Project, and in honor of National Best Friend Day, I’m blogging about my BPF – my Best Professional Friend – Kay Fittes, the founder and CEO of High Heeled Success. Approximately eleven years ago, I hung on her every word as a new Center Director participant in one of Kay’s workshops for early childhood program leaders. I was green as all get out but dying on the vine! Kay invited us to contact her if we ever needed anything. Well, over the next few years, I needed a lot! Like true mentoring relationships, ours developed organically as opposed to me asking her, “Are you my mentor?” ala Sheryl Sandburg’s Women, Work and the Will to Lead. Over time, Kay helped me to land a position as a training consultant at our region’s ECE resource and referral agency and that evolved into a full-time position. About that time, Kay and I met and I finally got up the nerve to broach the subject of training with her. Quick to explain, I don’t play well in the sand with other children, Kay nevertheless saw something in me that made her willing to try it. By the end of our first workshop – June 9, 2012 – I felt on top of the world. Kay felt so down about it that it took her weeks to finally shoot me straight. That hurt. But that pain proved to be such a powerful growth experience that we kept at it until we got it right. Hearing Kay tell me mentoring me has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her life, well, I’ll NEVER forget those words. Somehow this woman I wanted and still want to grow up to be just like had become my Best Professional Friend.
My relationship with Kay goes so much deeper than that though. Because I don’t have a close relationship with my mother, and Kay often points out the fact that she’s twenty years (and six days) older, I’ve often gone to her not only for advice, coaching and guidance on professional matters, she’s been an important part of my personal life as well. In fact, she has so many qualities I admire that she and my hubby – another best friend – often give me words of wisdom, word for word! She’s been there throughout my professional and personal mess to success stories! And the fact that Kay collaborates and consults with me professionally and has shared personal confidences that she doesn’t with others humbles and touches because it means she trusts and values me as much as I do her.
As a Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose presenter, I can honestly say I owe just about everything I am as a speaker to Kay. Not only that, she helped me set and reach my goal of obtaining my Masters and even walked me through which major to choose when I stood at a crossroads between Adult Learning with Technology and Leadership and Coaching. And because she steered me down the right path – how I would have hated fighting with IT related homework after working all day and being a wife and mom – I adored my studies and got educated and equipped to do work that is perfectly aligned with my purpose. Tomorrow when we present
on June 9, 2018 – it will mark our six-year anniversary. What a fitting way to celebrate National Best Friends Day and my Best Professional Friend – Kay.
