Party in Pink with a Purpose

Party in Pink with a Purpose

Service on Purpose (Professional Life)

It’s another day of being Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose and this weekend   I and my sister Zumba instructors led two hours of dancing for our annual Party in Pink Zumbathon with the purpose of  raising funds for the fight against breast cancer –– a major D  or challenge women face –– in the form of a diagnosis. All funds raised support the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention managed by Susan G. Komen. As a Women’s Center Director for a homeless shelter serving women and children with one year under my belt as of last week, I still pop up every morning grateful for the opportunity to do social work –– at the boots on the ground level –– that I consider full-time ministry. Likewise, though this year marked my third Zumbathon as an instructor (I teach 2x a week and sub), I’m just just as stoked as the year I became a licensed and officially joined the battle to prevent cancer at  my first Party in Pink with the purpose.

Serene at Home (Personal Life)

Much of the time, I feel like I deal with the Ds on the daily! Lately I’ve battled depression around dysfunctional relationships. Dancing –– a positive D ––  keeps my body fit. In fact, dancing led me to discover a 9mm tumor in my breast in 2014. It presented as stage 4 in every test. When biopsied, however, it came back benign. Either a team of physicians got it wrong or The Physician made it all right!!!  Dance also resets my emotions to an even keel and keeps me from losing my mind! That release of endorphins you’ve probably heard about? All true! And no matter what music I’m dancing to, there’s always an element of praise and worship in it for me. God created dance as a form of expression and whatever I’m dealing with is laid bare before him when I’m on the floor…I try my best to leave it there and then go home to sleep GOOD! : )

Spirit-Led (Prayer)

My prayer for you as Breast Cancer Awareness month draws to a close is that you’d be Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose and complete regular self-checks (that’s how I found the tumor) along with having an annual mammogram. Finally, when you have a chance, attend a Zumbathon and show support for those who have fought valiantly and others who are currently in the fight of their lives. By doing so, you’ll help minimize this barrier and maximize beauty and best lives. Because it’s more than an awesome two-hour chance to dance, it’s a Party in Pink with a purpose!

Blessed by My BFF

Blessed by My BFF

It’s Day 59 (reset) of the Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose Project, and I can’t expressed how blessed I am by my high school BFF.

Serene at Home (Personal)

As I shared in yesterday’s post, ongoing Ds –– challenges women face –– this time in the form of dysfunctional relationships, threatened to throw me into a fit of depression. One of the ways I fought back was calling Josette, my Swan Soul Sister from another mister, for some much needed girl time to celebrate her upcoming birthday and three years cancer free after her double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. She’d texted that we needed to do lunch. My response –– Tomorrow? Before hanging up, however, she hesitated and then told me about an encounter with a hater of mine who tried to disparage me to her. Ever my champion, Josette graciously shut her down with a smile and sent her on her way frustrated because she got no traction with my high school bestie. Grateful as I felt for her having my back, last night I  felt wounded to be stabbed in it by someone who is supposed to be in my corner…Then today, I teared up when Josette apologized for upsetting me. I’m not upset, I assured her. Just blessed by you!

Sense of Style/Shop the Look (Personal Packaging)

First day with somewhat fall-like weather in the 70s vs. recent record breaking 90s temps warranted breaking out brown handbag  & booties  paired w/floral top that reminds me of leaves turning, topped by a coral cardigan. All Calvin Klein from TJ Maxx. Maximize fall fashion! : )

Spirit – Led (Putting it Into Practice)

Little did this hater know, but by attempting to malign me, she made herself look so malicious! Rather than doing damage to my reputation, her true colors came shining through without me having to say a word against her. Thus proving God’s promise is true –– If we stay still, He’ll fight our battles (Exodus 14:14, NIV) –– or in my case, let our high school BFFs do it for us!

I pray you’ll be Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose, like my Josette, the next time someone tries to drag you into gossip or rumors. If you are, you may bless another Swan Sister to minimize her barriers and maximize her best life.

Be savvy & chic,

~Pink Collar Coach

May I Mention My Mentors?

May I Mention My Mentors?

I’m not going to lie. Day 148 of the Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose Project was one of the hardest I’ve had in a long time. The Ds that I was dealing with yesterday sent me plummeting emotionally today and at one point, I was close to despair, feeling as if the change of hearts I am waiting on will never come.  But often times, it’s in the our darkest hours that God’s love for us shines through and illuminates just what we need. The Daily Dose from The Smile Jar reminded me that a new day brings new strength. Then, the verse in my daily devotional was “They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength.” (Isaiah 40:31). I needed the reminder. And may I mention my Zumba mentors?

Usually, I only see two of the instructors who have been instrumental in me becoming one myself on Wednesday nights. This week, however, because our local Zumba for the Cure is this Friday night, our Monday night instructor danced with us so we can represent well when we party in pink to fight breast cancer. The energy this trio puts out is amazing and dancing with them lifted my burden to the degree that the smile on my face was probably the first heartfelt one all day. Each of them is Pink Collar Savvy & Chic in her own unique way, so when they began mentoring me almost two years ago, I dubbed them all with names that depict how I see them.

Beauty and Brains – Jodi

This playful, sassy wife and mamma of two has a serious side. She’s a rocket scientist.

Beauty and 3x a Lady – Kara

Not only does this multitasking mom of triplets teach Zumba, she teaches school all day.

Beauty and Strength – Angelique

Graceful as a ballerina & fierce on the dance floor, she lifts weights & wins competitions.

Beauty and Brains, Pink Collar Coach, Beauty & 3x a Lady, Beauty and Strength.

As a Pink Collar Savvy & Chic on Purpose Chick who knows that women taking the time to invest in one another makes a world of difference, not only in us making our dreams come true, but in dealing with our Ds, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my mentors. If you’ve had days where coming to teach wasn’t as appealing as it sometimes is, please know, if I was there, you made a difference. Just by coming to dance with us. I’m not the only one who feels this way. In fact, one of our newer regulars and I had a conversation tonight after class extolling al the positive benefits of dancing. Burning the calories, getting the heart rate up, dancing our stress and sadness away. Finding community, friends and our tribe. Not to mention, mentors…

Oh, and if you’ve never given Zumba a try, October is breast cancer awareness month. Zumbathons for The Cure are being held in various locations…You may just find your fit!

Be savvy & chic,

~Pink Collar Coach
